#403553 Circa Survive "Violent Waves" Discussion (08.28.2012)

Hi guys!!!

You all don't have to fight or be upset over this. This isn't completely unexpected, and there is no real way to know how these things even effect the overall sales of a record. Some could argue that having it leak now helps to build some hype and therefore helping more people become aware and maybe buying a record to support. for all of you that already preordered the record, and to those that will buy it even though it is free at this point, your support is obviously appreciated. And every purchase is going to help us continue more so than ever before because of the direct way we are doing this record. Those of you that will just take the freebee, we're all thieves hahaha. jk lol rofl

I'll be honest: they're my favorite band. They have been since I was 15 and now I am 22. I'm going to love everything they write. Everything. No matter how it is reviewed or perceived. I'm going to love it. It clearly makes my opinion a bit biased but I am prideful enough to believe that I have good taste in music and that's why I think their albums are generally beautiful.

If you guys haven't seen the whole set yet here it is.

If the link is messed up its because I'm on my phone. :-)

This show was so much fun even though I was stuck in a corner filming. I'm glad I did so everyone who couldn't make it could see the while set.

You just showed how close minded you are lol.  I said i would've liked them to keep some elements they experimented with in ex. songs such as house of leaves/car etc.Expanding on doing something new and evolving those sounds even more so like they did with OLG. BSN and Sharp practice were pretty straight forward formula songs. While some most done right and missing the spot * like im enemy, parts of sharp practice*. The great things about JUT/OLG is that each individual track was awesome and felt like they spent hours working on perfecting it.  Now they have what it seems like good album filler songs which is disappointing. You are no better, you add to the whinning and wah wah, "wah you guys are talking about what you would hope for but i rather just generalize the entire thing and cry cause you gush over every single thing wah"

yes, because not wanting the same things to be said over and over again is the true definition of close minded.

people keep making it a point to say that something is more poppy or that its more of a straight forward song. songs can be poppy and straight forward and still be good songs if they are done by the right people. like dylan said, there is more to circa survive than just doing the same things with their music that they started with. there are very few bands that i trust with their own music. circa is one of those bands. even if its not a clone of juturna like so many people want, we know there is going to be something different about the music that will be unique to them.

i don't know how you can call a song album filler when you haven't heard the album. its like people are in such a hurry to rush to judgement. they listen to a circa song, it doesn't sound like the first album so they decide they hate it. to me, that is being close minded. give the music a chance to sink in. wait until we can hear circa's take on this type of music. not everyone is going to want them to do the same thing, i get that. if you've been following the band for 6 or 7 years, you might want them to try something new. personally, i'd like to hear what they could do with a more poppy sound because i think that with how talented the guys are, they could write some really unique, catchy songs. it would just be something different from what we've heard in the past. if you've only recently gotten into them, you'll have a different opinion because you were pulled in by a certain sound and thats all you associate with this band.

they tried a new sound with BSN and even though some people might not like that sound as a whole, it produced some of the best songs this band has written. without the band going for something new, those songs would be there. i know that they could keep going in the same direction, writing the same type of music over and over and it would still sound pretty good. but anyone who has a passion knows that you aren't going to have nearly the same drive if you aren't challenging yourself by doing something you've never done before. i like everything that the band has done. its not because i "gush over every single thing" or i'm some annoying as shit, idiot fanboy that blindly worships the band. its just how its worked out. there are some songs i don't like as much as others, but i'm not going to get upset because they tried something new and talk in circles about the typical "their old stuff was so much better."

SONG titles?

I believe so.
I'm thinking a lot of these won't be the titles on the record though, haha.

if anyone has the Sumerian Records vinyl repress/reissue of Violent Waves released back in september,

could you please take some good overhead pics of:
the front and back covers
and the inside pages
and both sides of the records please?

we want to compare them with the original press and see if there are any subtle differences.

I actually asked sumerian about them when they first went live and they said the vinyl editions of violent waves that they have are from the first run that was self released.

Violent Waves is the perfect name for this record. Both the songs themselves and the entire album have an undulating flow to them. It's like being alone on a ship in the middle of the sea. It starts off with a storm unfolding, the clouds darkening, and eventually lightning piercing through the sky (Birth of Econ). Then the storm unleashes all its power and the waves start crashing into the boat (Sharp Practice). Then there's a calm (Suitcase) before the second storm (The Lottery). Etc, etc. The dynamic contrast and flow of VW really makes it beautiful.

if i'm remembering correctly, anthony did talk about this a little bit in an interview about 5 years ago. he talked about going to catholic school growing up and being raised with religion being a big part of his life. as he got older, he started forming his own opinion about all that stuff and decided that it wasn't the way he wanted to live his life. i believe it was in a podcast with alternative press magazine. i still have the podcast saved on my computer so if its not already available somewhere, i could upload it for you.
if this is the one you mean. the dl link is still good.

Its been a while since I posted here but I just couldn't resist..I've only listened to the album a couple times all the way through and its pretty much a masterpiece. I have to admit I was a lil nervous of where they'd take this one but now I realize I should a had more faith.....I have to agree with how the album rocks you back and forth like violent waves but after a couple listens I think these violent waves are a metaphor of life in general almost as if it were a concept album...I don't want to get into a whole huge ass explanation but I think of the first few tracks like they're everyday life struggles (references to money, etc) up until the instrumental at the end of my only friend which I think of like the beginning of a dream sequence which leads into the crest of the wave- phantasmagoria which the word itself means flashes of images like in a dream etc (sorry if the def. wasn't needed, I never heard that word before lol) and then there's a reference to not being awake at all in bird sounds which ultimately leads to the desperation at the end of I'll find away like when in a dream you'd do anything to have things go your way or something like that..and then ends with another instrumental almost like to signify the end of the dream sequence...

that was more than I planned to say whoops lol sorry if I rambled hahaha

regardless, i'm pretty sure you still listened last night the same as me. i'm not sure how you feel above me in any way in this case. i had nothing to do with leaking this album, and i in no way have taken anything from the band. in fact, i bought tickets and a vinyl. hell, on top of that, i've thrown money at this band for years. their potential profit loss is the fault of thinkidie last night. we can parse intellectual property all you want, but the fact is i paid full price for Violent Waves. the release date only purtains to my vinyl arriving in the mail as far as i'm concerned. besides every album leaks nowadays. if they honestly didn't expect a leak, they would be very naive (which i don't think seasoned musicians of their caliber can afford to be).

i hope this thread does't become a "hey, let's all hypocritically condescend to the those of us who chose to listen to the leak". that would be unfair.

Let's not even fucking put a dollar amount on how far our "fandom" goes because that's not what this is about and I didn't accuse you of shit. You made it sound like the band probably couldn't give two shits about their album leaking which is why I had a fit. I listened to two songs on the album and then notified the band of what happened and I have been working tirelessly on getting links reported and exchanging emails with a few of the guys in the band and they are so discouraged and upset by this. So excuse me for taking this shit very personally and wanting to try to make this right for some people I consider friends.

I felt the same way. It has elements of Juturna/BSN that I really enjoy.

I'm sorry, but they should really rethink who they have writing these things. Because, that's just stupid. I could never see how the song is about some particular girl? It starts off with boy and girl names in the beginning for Christsakes lol
