#403553 Circa Survive "Violent Waves" Discussion (08.28.2012)

Hi guys!!!

You all don't have to fight or be upset over this. This isn't completely unexpected, and there is no real way to know how these things even effect the overall sales of a record. Some could argue that having it leak now helps to build some hype and therefore helping more people become aware and maybe buying a record to support. for all of you that already preordered the record, and to those that will buy it even though it is free at this point, your support is obviously appreciated. And every purchase is going to help us continue more so than ever before because of the direct way we are doing this record. Those of you that will just take the freebee, we're all thieves hahaha. jk lol rofl

I'll be honest: they're my favorite band. They have been since I was 15 and now I am 22. I'm going to love everything they write. Everything. No matter how it is reviewed or perceived. I'm going to love it. It clearly makes my opinion a bit biased but I am prideful enough to believe that I have good taste in music and that's why I think their albums are generally beautiful.

If you guys haven't seen the whole set yet here it is.

If the link is messed up its because I'm on my phone. :-)

This show was so much fun even though I was stuck in a corner filming. I'm glad I did so everyone who couldn't make it could see the while set.

You just showed how close minded you are lol.  I said i would've liked them to keep some elements they experimented with in ex. songs such as house of leaves/car etc.Expanding on doing something new and evolving those sounds even more so like they did with OLG. BSN and Sharp practice were pretty straight forward formula songs. While some most done right and missing the spot * like im enemy, parts of sharp practice*. The great things about JUT/OLG is that each individual track was awesome and felt like they spent hours working on perfecting it.  Now they have what it seems like good album filler songs which is disappointing. You are no better, you add to the whinning and wah wah, "wah you guys are talking about what you would hope for but i rather just generalize the entire thing and cry cause you gush over every single thing wah"

yes, because not wanting the same things to be said over and over again is the true definition of close minded.

people keep making it a point to say that something is more poppy or that its more of a straight forward song. songs can be poppy and straight forward and still be good songs if they are done by the right people. like dylan said, there is more to circa survive than just doing the same things with their music that they started with. there are very few bands that i trust with their own music. circa is one of those bands. even if its not a clone of juturna like so many people want, we know there is going to be something different about the music that will be unique to them.

i don't know how you can call a song album filler when you haven't heard the album. its like people are in such a hurry to rush to judgement. they listen to a circa song, it doesn't sound like the first album so they decide they hate it. to me, that is being close minded. give the music a chance to sink in. wait until we can hear circa's take on this type of music. not everyone is going to want them to do the same thing, i get that. if you've been following the band for 6 or 7 years, you might want them to try something new. personally, i'd like to hear what they could do with a more poppy sound because i think that with how talented the guys are, they could write some really unique, catchy songs. it would just be something different from what we've heard in the past. if you've only recently gotten into them, you'll have a different opinion because you were pulled in by a certain sound and thats all you associate with this band.

they tried a new sound with BSN and even though some people might not like that sound as a whole, it produced some of the best songs this band has written. without the band going for something new, those songs would be there. i know that they could keep going in the same direction, writing the same type of music over and over and it would still sound pretty good. but anyone who has a passion knows that you aren't going to have nearly the same drive if you aren't challenging yourself by doing something you've never done before. i like everything that the band has done. its not because i "gush over every single thing" or i'm some annoying as shit, idiot fanboy that blindly worships the band. its just how its worked out. there are some songs i don't like as much as others, but i'm not going to get upset because they tried something new and talk in circles about the typical "their old stuff was so much better."

if anyone has the Sumerian Records vinyl repress/reissue of Violent Waves released back in september,

could you please take some good overhead pics of:
the front and back covers
and the inside pages
and both sides of the records please?

we want to compare them with the original press and see if there are any subtle differences.

I actually asked sumerian about them when they first went live and they said the vinyl editions of violent waves that they have are from the first run that was self released.

Violent Waves is the perfect name for this record. Both the songs themselves and the entire album have an undulating flow to them. It's like being alone on a ship in the middle of the sea. It starts off with a storm unfolding, the clouds darkening, and eventually lightning piercing through the sky (Birth of Econ). Then the storm unleashes all its power and the waves start crashing into the boat (Sharp Practice). Then there's a calm (Suitcase) before the second storm (The Lottery). Etc, etc. The dynamic contrast and flow of VW really makes it beautiful.

Not sure how they are doing the layout with the band name/album name on the front but this is what will be on the front of the album. This is currently hanging in my friend's home and I've been plotting to lift it for months now.

This album is a more upbeat, more experimental On Letting Go.

I liked BSN, but it just didn't speak to me, it didn't feel like Circa to me. I was so scared that I wouldn't like this album if that was the direction they were going, and then I heard Suitcase and it felt like a very BSN type song with a very simple structure and kind of rigid vocals.

But holy fuck was I wrong, this album is amazing, possibly their best. It definitely has an old school Circa vibe, but with something new. It covers similar subject matter to OLG, but it treats it in a different light, almost an aura of acceptance or positivity, it is the sound of maturation. This is Circa at their most frenetic, the music atmospheric and tight as ever, and Anthony's vocal melodies are soaring. This is what I wanted BSN to be.

Bird Sounds and My Only Friend are the best tracks to me, but the album is perfect. There are some songs that are definitely a new sound like Phantasmagoria and Think of Me When They Sound, but they pull it off and the songs work, it feels like a fun departure.

I still don't think the closer is as strong as Your Friends Are Gone, because I prefer the epic exploding climax to the reserved conclusion, but it fits with the theme and title of the album. This album does remind me of violent waves, it has moments of concussiveness, like waves banging into the shore, and then very quietly rolling back into the ocean.

If Sharp Practice was "radio-friendly" as you all seem to think, I would listen to the radio 24/7. I wouldn't even be able to sleep without the radio on.

#401310 Circa Survive & Anthony Green "Lyric Archive" & Discussion

Posted ߣR on 05 June 2012 - 12:12 AM

you know we don't discuss these lyrics enough. I like the way you guys think about this stuff.

For some reason just a few moments ago i felt the need to read into Devil's Song. Some lyrics about that song i've always interpreted a certain way, but never fully understood. Like the line "We're all in the same spot" I always felt like he was saying we're all in same boat. We all experience these things because we're all human. But then i felt like idk.. maybe i'm not really thinking about this in the right way.

I went on songmeanings and i read these interepretations that kind of resonated with me:

Rated  0 This song could also be interpreted in a spiritual way. It might seem like a CRAZYY interpretation but bare with me lol..

the way it sounds to me is that Anthony green wrote the story about how humans came to be the way they are. There was a spirit (a Good and innocent one) that encountered a demon. (I also believable that demons or the devil are'nt necessarily what we think of as demons, but its an evil entity which could be labeled as the EGO or identity that separates from everything else. i.e The voice in our heads that only makes us think about ourselves sometimes. this is the complete opposite of a good spirit)

the problem is that the ego is like a parasite so it needs to be attached to something for it to live and grow. Without a mind to posses the ego is powerless..

So the demon tricked the spirit into allowing it to free itself through the spirits mind by promising to give the spirit a name or an identity. The spirit being pure and innocent to evil fell for thinking having an identity was something good. Once the spirit and the devil united they were both reborn as a human. Thats why in the end when anthony says "this feels like a nightmare, We're all in the same spot" I think he's getting at the fact that the spirit and the devil coexist in the same place which is the human mind but after years of coexisting the spirit finally figured out what happened: "won't be too long
to finally see the evil you've become"

Rated  +1 I think everyone is thinking too hard its seriously about selling his soul to the devil for fame

the demon says "please let me free I'll do anything"
they came to an agreement the demons freedom for his "name" or fame and fortune and the devil begins to sing through him

the lin about the devil's song not being too long means success was short lived and quickly turns into a nightmare of entrapment into anthony's singing career which is stated by the fact the devil cries all through the night in reference to night after night of being trapped by the devil's song

The end is a reflection that demons arent to be trusted because all the fame he has received still leaves him feeling empty and unfullfilled because he sees the error of his ways and he feels he hasnt progressed because its the devils voice speaking through him rather than his own
